A Relaxing Rhode Island Weekend Getaway At Weekapaug Inn
Travel Planning

Sometimes the best vacations don’t require a flight or a packed itinerary. For Bob and Megan Klingenberger, a long weekend in Westerly, Rhode Island delivered the perfect combination of coastal relaxation, memorable meals, and classic New England charm.

Their Rhode Island vacation centered around Weekapaug Inn in Westerly, a cozy waterfront resort that gave them plenty of reasons to slow down and enjoy summer by the coast.
Getting To Weekapaug Couldn’t Be Easier
Bob and Megan started their trip with an early morning train from New York City’s Penn Station to Westerly. The ride takes less than three hours, making Weekapaug Inn an excellent choice for travelers who want to maximize a long weekend without spending half of it in transit.
Weekapaug Inn picked them up at the station, and they arrived around 9:30 am. Their room wasn’t ready yet, but they immediately received access to the property. After lunch on the outdoor porch, they spent their first afternoon relaxing by the pool.
For a summer stay, Megan recommends packing:
- Athleisure for relaxed mornings and walks
- Beach and pool attire
- Resort wear or smart casual outfits for dinner
- Light layers for cooler coastal evenings
A Cozy New England Stay
Weekapaug Inn offers a quieter alternative to its sister property, Ocean House in nearby Watch Hill. While Ocean House captures the grandeur and energy of a quintessential New England resort, Weekapaug Inn feels smaller, cozier, and more secluded.

That peaceful atmosphere made it an ideal home base for Bob and Megan’s Rhode Island weekend getaway.
“Much of Saturday and Sunday followed a wonderfully simple routine: breakfast overlooking the pond, hours at the beach, and afternoons by the pool,” says Megan.

The Inn provides beach chairs and umbrellas, while the nearby boathouse makes grabbing lunch or a snack easy.
Dining, Spa Time, And Watch Hill
Of course, they made time to explore beyond the Inn.
On Friday, Megan visited the spa at Ocean House and enjoyed a prenatal massage. The relaxation room overlooks the grounds and ocean, creating a beautiful setting to unwind.

That evening, Bob and Megan headed into Watch Hill for dinner at The Olympia Tea Room, a local favorite that dates back to 1939. The restaurant doesn’t accept reservations, so travelers should prepare for a wait during busy summer evenings.
After dinner, they stopped at St. Clair Annex for homemade ice cream and enjoyed it by the water around sunset.
Back at Weekapaug Inn, they caught the end of the property’s Friday night Movies on the Pond, where families gather on the lawn to watch a movie beneath the stars.
A Weekend Filled With Memorable Meals
Saturday evening brought an upscale dinner at Coast at Ocean House. Bob and Megan enjoyed a three-course meal featuring local ingredients and seafood, along with exceptional service. The restaurant also thoughtfully adjusted Megan’s meal to accommodate her pregnancy.
Sunday’s Coastal Grill Series became another highlight. Tables filled the lawn as guests enjoyed freshly grilled meat, fish, and summer sides. Bob and Megan’s favorites included:
- Smoked brisket
- Grilled striped bass tacos
- Classic summer sides
- S’mores around the fire
Lawn games and open spaces made the evening especially fun for multigenerational families.

After dinner, Bob and Megan played chess inside the Inn before heading to the fire pit for s’mores and stargazing.
