When your last name is Klingenberger, Bavaria might seem like an obvious destination! For Bob and Megan, this trip was about much more than family heritage. They sought a balance of history, culture, food, and natural beauty – something Bavaria delivered in spades. Their journey took them to Vienna, Salzburg, and Munich, each offering a unique experience full of charm and discovery.

Ready to plan your next European adventure? Whether you’re planning to travel solo, coordinate a family vacation, or take that romantic getaway you’ve always dreamed of, our expert travel advisors are here to help you plan your next unforgettable trip!

A City of Walkable Beauty: Vienna

Megan’s favorite stop was Vienna, a city brimming with history and elegance. Every turn in the Innere Stadt district revealed breathtaking views of historic buildings and manicured gardens. Vienna’s “cafe culture” invites travelers to slow down and savor the moment, something Bob and Megan embraced daily.

Megan indulged in sweet pastries like apple strudel and sachertorte, while Bob enjoyed the local beer. For them, Vienna’s charm was as much about its sights as its leisurely pace.

Immersion in Local Traditions

One of the highlights of their trip was their evening at Augustiner Bräu Mülln, Austria’s largest beer garden in Salzburg. With an absence of WiFi, music, and TV screens, the beer garden encourages guests to enjoy good food, beer, and company.

The manager is passionate about the garden’s history and tradition and shared stories about the 500 organizations and members who have lockers to store their steins between visits. It was a memorable and authentic experience that stood out among their many local encounters.

Exploring History: Palaces and Politics

The couple’s tour of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum offered a deep dive into art history, with highlights ranging from Klimt’s grand staircase murals to Bellotto’s famous Belvedere Palace painting. Salzburg brought a more somber tone with a visit to Eagle’s Nest, a retreat for the Nazi elite built in the 1930s.

The stark contrast between the luxurious setting and the regime’s atrocities left a lasting impression on both Bob and Megan. Munich’s Third Reich walking tour further emphasized how the city has grappled with its dark history while rebuilding itself into a beautiful, old-world destination.

A Culinary Adventure

Their culinary journey was just as significant as the historical sites. From the famous 30-centimeter-wide Wiener schnitzel at Figlmüller in Vienna to the traditional Bavarian beer gardens in Munich, Bob and Megan savored every bite.

They recommend spreading out traditional dishes over the course of your visit—starting with roasted pork and Nürnberger sausages at Zum Durnbrau in Munich and ending with pretzels and schnitzel at Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl am Dom. Each meal was a cultural experience in itself.

Effortless Exploration

One of the perks of traveling in Bavaria was the seamless public transportation system, which made exploring Vienna, Salzburg, and Munich a breeze. Bob and Megan particularly appreciated the ease of hopping on buses and trains to visit landmarks like Schönbrunn Palace and Prater Park in Vienna. Yet, they also found that most of the city centers were very walkable, allowing them to take in the sights at a leisurely pace.

A Hidden Gem

For those looking for a hidden gem in Vienna, Bob and Megan recommend a visit to Blaue Bar in Hotel Sacher. Instead of waiting in line at the café for the famous sachertorte, they opted for the hotel bar’s cozy, luxurious atmosphere, complete with crystal chandeliers and plush couches. It was so enjoyable that they returned for a second visit!
